Choose paint wisely!

Postby yourlocaltrades on Wed May 13, 2009 4:41 pm

The wife bought yellow paint for the kitchen, even got yellow gloss to match.
The yellow was not yellow!! It dried to be a horrible weird mustardy colour-the gloss was just as bad!
Not a disaster so to speak-but painting the kitchen twice in two days and paying for paint twice over really was not amusing!!

Lounge is being painted shortly too-only painted that about 8 months ago!!
Will keep you posted on colours!!

What a disaster! Ive had a few mishaps where i did not take the natural light into consideration and the color looked MUCH different than it did on the colour card!

I hear that a lot unfortunately! Often one color will look "exactly" like another but unless you have a dried sample with you it's unlikely you'll be able to notice subtle differences in the colors appearances from different lighting. Always compare dried samples under the same light at the paint shop - if the color is off you should be able to get them to mix it up a bit different for you.

I used to work in a paint store and it's very common problem. The best thing you can do is buy a liter or quart to paint a small patch and see if you like it.This will save you money when it comes to choosing a color but will cost you a bit more time. It's so tough to choose colors as the lighting from the paint store and then room to room in your house changes so dramatically.

Good Luck
I know it's a tough one.

Oh that's sad to hear. Got the same problem when I wanted to paint my room myself. Turned out that the color I picked was darker than what I wanted it to be. Maybe it would be helpful if you test the color by getting a small amount then let it dry to see what color it would turn out. :D

Hi yourlocaltrades,

I have to agree with Almo99, that is the best advice. Paint a small area and let it dry first. This will save you a lot of time, money and agony in the long run. You can try different shades as well, this will help you choose the perfect color for your walls, taking the effect of natural light and the rest of your furniture and decorations into consideration.

Good luck!
