BUILD YOUR OWN CONSERVATORY AND SAVE THOUSANDS

July 6, 2009 – 3:33 pm

Building your own conservatory

A conservatory is the ideal way to create some extra living space without the expense of moving house or building a full extension. In many cases, planning permission is not needed. This versatile space can be used as a sun room, dining room, family den or a study – letting in light, warmth and views of the garden. Building your own conservatory can save you money, while adding value to your property.

According to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), a conservatory could increase the value of your property by up to 5%. Keen DIY-ers can build their own conservatory to maximise the financial benefits, doing it yourself means you get the conservatory you want at a fraction of the price.

Why DIY?

Building your own conservatory may seem like a daunting task, but if you’re on a budget it is well worth looking into. Trade Price Conservatories come with a full installation guide and plans, as well as expert advice from our team just a phone call away. You can make considerable savings on labour costs with no need for fitters. They also offer the Durabase System which enables you to build your base in a fraction of the time that is needed for a traditional base, and no need to have a builder in to do the base and brickwork, another huge saving!

With a DIY project you are in charge, not reliant on builders and fitters or waiting for them to turn up! The added bonus at the end of it is when you are sitting in it; drink in hand, knowing you did it this yourselves!

The Benefits of uPVC

uPVC is by far the cheapest material for making a conservatory, but it’s also the most durable. Unlike wood, uPVC does not swell, split or need ongoing maintenance to stay looking good as new. So once you’ve decided to go for it, all you need to do is decide what style of conservatory you want to build and the colour. Trade Price not only offers the traditional white you can have mahogany, rosewood or oak. It is also possible to have a Woodgrain effect on the outside and white on the inside of your conservatory.

Designing Your Conservatory

The most important consideration is to choose a design that complements the style of your home. Make sure it doesn’t dominate the garden or dwarf the house itself. Does your house have clean simple lines (Georgian or post-war) or does it have more ornate details? The conservatory should echo the existing style.

Think about where your conservatory should go and remember that different aspects have their own advantages and disadvantages:

East facing – This will get early morning sunshine, making an ideal breakfast room. It could be cold in the winter, but won’t overheat in the middle of the day or evening.

West facing – This will get sun from late afternoon onwards, making it a good place for evening entertaining.

North facing – Depending on your garden, this could get very little sunlight at all, especially in winter.

South facing – This aspect is prone to overheating in the summer as it gets sun almost all day.
